| Manor House | |
|
The 1882 “Mansion” as the Schedels called it, was the centerpiece of their original garden design. Today it still makes a formidable impression when entering the grounds and serves as a beautiful and stately backdrop to many of the vistas the gardens affords.Built as a large farmhouse in the late 19th century, the house survived a rather extensive fire in the late 1930s and was renovated as a result by Fredrick Stieffler. The Schedels renovated it extensively once again in the late mid 60sthat’s still the state the home is in today for the most part. The home was furnished by the Schedel’s with American furniture and artwork, as well as treasures and antiquities from around the globe, including rare antique Persian rugs, Flemish tapestries, archaic Chinese bronzes, ancient carved jade artwork and more! In fact, as the house developed its character (and with the arrival of the “Shack” in the floodplain) the Schedels began calling the main house the “Museum.” |
