The Schedel Arboretum and Gardens is a 17 acre garden estate. A nature experience unlike any other in Northwest Ohio. Each year the beauty and serenity of this treasure brings thousands to the estate on the banks of the Portage River in Elmore, Ohio. Since 1991 the SA&G has proved to be an extraordinary experience for young and old alike.
Together, for more than 50 years, Joe and Marie Schedel lived, dreamed, planned and built this unique resource for the study and appreciation of Nature
During their travels to more than 120 countries, the Schedel’s acquired unique and significant collections of art, antiques, jewelry, antique carved jade, archaic bronze and, most notably, plants
The Schedel’s dream was to create a sanctuary based upon Nature where all would be welcome to visit and experience in perpetuity the wonder of their legacy
Upon Marie’s passing in 1989 (surviving Joe after his death in 1981), the Schedel Foundation assumed care and operation of the estate and, in accordance with the Schedel’s wishes, as outlined in 1963 when the foundation was created, opened it to the public in 1991
The foundation board has adopted the mission of the SA&G as: “Offering life enhancing experiences, for current and future generations, by providing unique opportunities for the study and appreciation of Nature and the arts.”
